Gomersal Barossa Shiraz 2005 - $20 Yep, pretty bloody good. A rich nose of dried blackcurrants. A rich wine, super smooth, sweet and stupidly good value for money. Drink: 2008 - 2011 Eat: Chargrilled Mustard marinated lamb backstrap

Climbing Orange Shiraz 2006
$20 Yep. Hits all the right buttons. Great fruit sweetness on this wine - soft enough tannins to drink now, but enough that this would be even better in a few years. Don't leave too long, because this is a good kind of fruit sweetness which makes it a delight. Eat: Beef tomato and mushroom braise Drink: Now-3yrs 90 Points www.climbingwines.com.au |

Plunkett Blackwood Ridge
Strathbogie Ranges Shiraz 2005 $17 The joining forces of the Plunkett and Fowles families have certainly paid off if this wine has anything to do with it. Intense vibrant violets and blueberries on the nose, with a long, well structured sweetness on the palate. All this for a wine which you can pick up for even cheaper directly. I would imagine that this is going to go fast. Where are the Strathboogie Ranges? Glad you asked: MAP Eat: 93 Points |

Cape Jaffa Limestone Coast Shiraz 2004 $20
Derek
Hooper has done a fantastic job of this wine at a great price, and the only
reason it is still around is that he made more than normal. Lucky for us. 90 Points |

Cape Jaffa Siberia Shiraz 2005 $34.95 The grapes for this wine come from the top of one hill in the coldest vineyard, hence the name. Only produced in good years. Incredibly inky blueberry flavours, with some expensive fine grain oak. This is a well balanced big wine. Eat: Duck and oyster mushroom risotto. Drink: Now to 2018

Te_Aro Estate Harolds Block 2004 ($24) The Fromm family have been producing grapes for years & years but have only had their own label for the last few years, and took them only a vintage to get their Shiraz spot on. Te-Aro means "to plough" in Latin, and the balance in this wine means you could easily plough through a bottle of it without getting that hot heavy richness which can be found in many new styles of Shiraz from slightly warmer regions. Watch out for their GSM (one of my faves) and their great example of Semillon.

Glen Eldon Barossa Shiraz 2000 ($20) This one split the panel. most judges picked up Volatile Acid (VA) levels, giving it a slight nail polish remover nose, interrupting what was some spectacular fruit. Maybe not the 2000, but might be one to keep an eye on judging by the high quality of fruit behind it.

Wynns Michael Shiraz 2004 ($54) I think this is having "downtime" at the moment. A spectacular peppery wine, which I think will much better in a year or two. Drink: 2010-18

Koonara Angel's Peak Coonawarra Shiraz
2004 ($15) Being my wine my score wasn't included in the final average of points. 2nd year of release for this new label. Keep your eyes out for a slight change in label next year. Drink: "mass of spice, cloves, pepper, oak obvious, lifted nose" "nice spicy fruit, lengthy spice palate" "big oak, sweet smell long finish peppers & plum" "front palate sweetness, pretty fuit, savoury clove, unusual, savoury and sweet fruit" "nice oak, fine tannins"

BendBrook Goatrack Shiraz 2004 ($33) - "Experience is what you get when you
don't get what you want", as their label states, is definitely talking
past tense. They are getting what they want now, and getting better &
better each year.
Food: Pepper Crusted Eye

Tiltili Langhorne Creek Shiraz Cabernet Blend 2004 - $11 Way way way too cheap. Langhorne Creek thanks to the likes of Bremerton, Brothers in Arms, and Steps Rd, it is stepping back into the limelight. Tiltili has an well balanced wine, with just the right amount of Oak. Silky tannins. Spend the time to seek them out, because this wine should be $20. They also have a Viognier, which is one of the best I've ever tasted. Score: 91 www.tiltiliwines.com.au |
